Facebook Joins the Web Search Bandwagon

October 18th, 2008

Facebook finally rolled out is long-awaited web search integration feature. It amazes me that it took so long for Microsoft and Facebook to add web search integration to the extremely popular site. Facebook yields an estimated 186 million searches per month according to comScore. This number is expected to increase dramatically once the Live search integration is in full effect.

There is a rumor being circulated by VentureBeat that claims Facebook is tweaking the Live Search results pages based on social data it knows about you. While this is going to be a concern for some, it could provide a signficant differentiation from . Facebook has already taken down the Live Search feature once, so it isn’t clear if it will remain up this time. Things are looking positive though.

Yahoo Launches Web Analytics

October 11th, 2008

Yahoo announced this week that it had finished the integration of IndexTools into the Yahoo network and is re-branding the service as Yahoo Web Analytics. The new analytics tool will support Yahoo Stores, Yahoo Developers, and Yahoo Head Advertisers programs.

If you are a Yahoo Store owner, you will now have free access to enterprise-grade web analytics as part of your service. All you will have to do is click a button and Yahoo will take care of the integration with your store. Currently, Yahoo is limiting access to just a few groups of customers, but plans to expand access in the future. Yahoo is not saying exactly who will get access next or when the tools will be expanded, so those of us not in one of the chosen groups will have to wait for our turn to try the new Web Analytics out.

Comcast Officially Limits Usage

October 5th, 2008

This isn’t exactly an related issue, but a very important issue nonetheless. This past week, Comcast became the first major US broadband provider to limit usage to its customers. Comcast broadband subscribers will now be limited to 250 gigabytes of data transfer each month. While the 250 gb limit that Comcast has chosen will affect a very small number of users, it is a very big step towards a more monitored and regulated internet. Whether or not you agree with Comcast’s decision, this will be an interesting topic to watch over the next year or two.

New adCenter Learning Center Debuts

October 3rd, 2008

In an effort to boost its advertising revenues, Microsoft has just launched a learning center for users of its adCenter advertising site. Microsoft has designed the learning center area to be educational and useful for advertisers of all experience levels. Users will now have access to videos, interactive tools, and Q&A areas to  learn how to maximize their advertising dollars with Microsoft. I’m not sure if this will provide much improvement for Microsoft’s advertising market share, but it certainly won’t hurt.

New Browser Privacy Tools Threaten Affiliate Marketers

September 27th, 2008

One of the major improvements boasted by both the new Internet Explorer 8 and ’s Chrome browser is the new privacy protections put in place. Both browsers have increased cookie blocking abilities and even include a mode that allows you to surf the web in a near anonymous manner.

The problem this presents to affiliate marketers is clear, most of these programs track referrals through the use of cookies. If browsers start to block these cookies on a regular basis, it could really shake things up for marketers. Linkshare has some technologies that do not require cookies, but the vast majority of programs still track referrals in this manner.

Given the incredible amount of identity theft and fraud going on today, increased privacy is generally thought to be a good thing. We should only expect this to become a bigger and bigger issue with more safeguards put in place in the future. Anyone running an affiliate program should be looking for the next technology now so that they are not stranded in the future as more and more users block the tracking cookies.
