Marketing Through Blog Comments?

October 1st, 2008

I have had a couple of people ask me about the effectiveness of marketing websites through posting links in comments on actively read blogs. This marketing technique is very difficult to use today. Most blog sites have built in spam features to help eliminate any comments that are seen as spam, and once you are reported as a spammer on a blog, it will get even more difficult after that.

That said, I highly recommend reading your favorite blogs on a regular basis and contributing via comments whenever appropriate. If you can add value to a blog on a regular basis, then it will not appear out of the ordinary for you to include the occasional link to relevant content on your site. It is very important that you only try this on blogs that you have  a history of quality postings in order to not be flagged as a spammer.

Anytime you post a comment on a blog that is not your own, your primary intent should be to add value to the discussion or the site. If you can honestly do that by including a link to something you wrote, that’s perfectly fine. I think the bottom line here is that blog comments are not a great marketing strategy, but there are instances where you can use them to generate traffic to one of your pages.
